Brigade General (Res.) Mordechai Kahana was born in Jerusalem and grew up in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. After completing his studies at the Rav Kook Yeshivah High-school, and several years in the Hesder program at the Golan Heights, he underwent basic training in the Golani Brigade, and was assigned to the elite reconnaissance unit of Golani.
After completing officer's training school, he served as the deputy commander of the Golani reconnaissance unit, taking part in combat in southern Lebanon, and rising to the position of commander of the reconnaissance unit.
In his next position, he served as the commander of the elite counter-guerilla Egoz unit and commanded it in the Second Lebanon War, in the Battle of Maroon al-Ras and in others.
After the war, he was sent to college where he gained a BA, and in 2008 was promoted to the rank of colonel. His next appointment was commander of the southern brigade in the Gaza Strip.
In November 2012 , he was assigned to command the Bislamach Brigade. In 2014 he commanded the Israel Defense Forces in an operation in Azza during which its fighters killed 160 Hamas terrorists, exposed 20 tunnels and destroying three of them, as well as a military depot , and also damaged the communication infrastructure of the Hamas organization in the Gaza Strip.
On August 31, 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and appointed commander of the “Combat Intelligence Corp”.
After 30 intense years as one of Israel’s most effective combat officers, Brigadier General Kahana served as head of the security policy division at Israel’s National Security Council.
In March 2021 , he was appointed to the position of General Director of the Ministry of Intelligence, and in 2022, the then Prime Minister Naftali Bennett appointed him to the position of General Director of the Ministry of Settlements.
